Why Everyone Needs a Little Tax Talk

If you're a normal, red-blooded human being, you probably think talking about tax issues is about as exciting as discussing the life of a dust mite. But I’m certain this blog will be more exciting to you than one about dust mites. While it's not always the most exciting topic, tax talk is important and can be interesting, even intriguing, because these issues are relevant to just about everyone, and they affect the all-important dollar.

Check the Tax Talk Blog Often, Save Time and Money!

The IRS estimates that it takes Americans as a whole over 7 billion hours to comply with the tax code annually. Imagine how much better life could be if you could take some of that time back, to do the things you would rather be doing! The more you can understand taxes, the less time you’ll spend trying to figure them out, and the more time you’ll have to spend playing with your kids, or your cat, or organizing your stamp collection—whatever it is that you love to do more than doing your taxes!

Unfortunately, navigating the tax code is like trying to find your way out of a highly complex corn maze while it's constantly shifting around you. The tax code is currently about 3.8 million words long, and tax issues are always evolving. In the last ten years alone, there have been 4,428 changes made to the U.S. tax code, an average of MORE than one per day.

Despite the constant flux, it’s vital that taxpayers stay abreast of tax code changes. We need accurate, up-to-the-minute information IF we want to keep our hard-earned cash cozy in our pockets, where it belongs. Unfortunately, there’s also a lot of misinformation out there surrounding the topic of taxes. Even sources as reputable as The Washington Post occasionally spread tax-based misinformation.

How is it possible, then, to find your way out of the monstrous, shifting corn maze that is U.S. tax regulations? Reading the Tax Talk Blog (TTB) on a regular basis is a great first step. Here, I will try to give you a bird’s eye view of this maze as it shifts. So if the thought of saving money through being well-informed quickens your pulse a little, congratulations! You’ve come to the right place, and you now understand why the TTB is more exciting than a blog about dust mites.

You Don't Know What You Don't Know. Let's Change That.

Though changes in the tax world are clearly commonplace, these changes aren’t exactly making headlines. When tax issues do appear in the news, they are often surrounded with inaccurate or incomplete information. This is where the TTB comes in. Here, you will find musings, observations, and occasional rants from me, Shelly Goch, on a variety of current tax-related topics. As a professional who has acquired over 25 years of experience with tax preparation in New York City, I can make you aware of happenings in the tax world that may affect you, while also offering unique insight on these events and what they mean to you. Hopefully, I can also make you laugh (or at least crack a smile) in the process!

Checking the TTB on a regular basis should be especially beneficial to you if you are

  • Starting your own business

  • Running your own business in both the U.S. and abroad

  • Thinking about changing your marital status

  • Considering taking your unmarried relationship to the next level by sharing assets (such as a home or investments) and/or children

So check back here at the TTB. Readers are encouraged to remark on my posts via the comment boxes below, and even to suggest topics they’d like me to post about in the future!

If you’d like to contact me directly, I would be happy to hear from you. Please scroll to the very bottom of the page, where you’ll find my work addresses, telephone numbers, and email address.

Until next time, happy taxing!
